From the home office for Public High School Sports…The PSAL Football Championship Division playoffs have reached the quarterfinal stage, while the Bowl and Cup Division Postseason is set in motion with the semi-finals this weekend.  We’ll also follow the developments in the soccer championships as well as scan last week’s football outcomes plus give you a glimpse into this week’s playoff primer on another PSAL Playoff Pigskin edition of the Award Winning "On the Sidelines" with Vinny Aceto,  Friday, November 14, 2009 at 1:00 PM.  

Sheepshead Bay had a dramatic, late come from behind victory over Susan Wagner to advance to the Championship Division ‘Great Eight’ this weekend.  Head coach Fred Snyder visits with us to discuss the Sharks nail biter and look ahead to their match up with second seeded Erasmus Hall.

This week we’ll take another ferry ride to Staten Island to converse with Pete Gambardella following Curtis’ first round playoff triumph over Lehman and his first at the helm of his alma mater.  

In addition, we’ll preview the Bowl Division semi-finals with Springfield Gardens head coach Charles Yarborough. He’ll breakdown the strengths, weaknesses and keys to victory, this week, after having played all of the final four squads.

91.5 FM Public High School Player of the Week

Post Season Week 1
Naquan Alexander (RB, Sheepshead Bay) tallied thrice on his way to a 169 yard day on 16 carries as the Sharks came from behind and surfed past Susan Wagner 34-28 in a Championship Division first round playoff game.  Alexander scored on runs from 15 and 85 yards in the final 6:11 of the first half to give Sheepshead Bay a 20-16 halftime lead.  He added a 4 yard third quarter touch to extend the Sharks advantage to 26-16, and final two point conversion to seal the deal with 1:40 remaining in the contest.

Week 9
Shaquan Coles (RB, Curtis) the PSAL’s leading rusher (1,598) garnered 366 yards on 38 carries while recording a quadruple of touchdowns, on runs of 5, 30, 66, and 2 yards, as Curtis conquered Port Richmond, 32-19.

Week 8
Naquan Alexander (RB, Sheepshead Bay) opened the scoring on the first play from scrimmage with a 59 yard dash to the house enroute to a four touchdown and 174 yard day on 11 carries as the Sharks submerged Brooklyn Tech 34-13.  The other scores came from 21, 18, and 39 yards out.

Week 7
Davon Collins (RB, New Utrecht) galloped for 203 yards on 14 carries while recording four touchdowns as the Utes defeated Grady, 40-6.

Week 6
Troy Greaves (K, WR, LB, Lafayette) booted the game winning field goal as time ran out for a 9-7 victory over Stuyvesant ending the Patriots 32 game losing streak.  Coincidently their last win came on September 16, 2006 also against the Peglegs. Greaves contributed on both sides of ball by registering 10 tackles with a sack and also catching 3 passes for 43 yards.

Week 5
Andrae Simpson (HB/LB, South Bronx) recorded 11 tackles and a sack, while also delivering a rushing touchdown (4-93 yards) as the Phoenix rose over Petrides, 38-0, delivering their first loss of the season in the Cup Division.

Week 4
Curtis Defensive Unit overwhelmed and overpowered the Madison Offense (which totaled negative 19 yards for the day) in their 54-0 shutout. Limited the Knights ‘O’ to a solitary first down (which came on their first possession).
Penn State bound Dominique Easley had six tackles and tallied on an 18 yard pick six, Taykwan Lynch recorded a safety; Kassim Forbes recovered a fumble, while Jevon Gardner (six tackles) and Kirk Dudley each registered sacks.  Andy McCoy had a reservation for 6 with a 57 yard punt return.

Week 3
Matt Popovic (QB, New Dorp) had a hand in six of the Central Cougars seven touchdowns in their 49-14 conquest of Bayside. He had touchdown runs of 1, 35, 14 and 34 (8 carries for 115 yards) while throwing for two more from 24 and 39 yards out (6-11,106 yards).

Week 2
Andrew  Vital (QB, Abraham Lincoln) the Railsplitters signal caller had a spectacular day, completing 9 of 12 passes for 137 yards and a touch while galloping for 192 yards on 23 carries totaling 3 touchdowns and the decisive two point conversion in the thrilling, 34-32, overtime victory over Canarsie.

Week 1
Jimmy Hasson (K, Petrides) kicked the game winning 18 yard field goal with 6 seconds remaining to beat Stevenson 23-20.
