It’s that time of year again. The 2009-2010 bowling play-offs begin on Monday, November 16th. This year, 49 teams will be vying for the elusive Championship trophy and PSAL championship banner that only one team can bring to their school.
# 1 seed, Tottenville, a perennial powerhouse and City Champs for the past two years are looking like the team to beat once again. Coached by Ralph Mustillo, they have been in the semis or quarter finals every year since 2004. Their “A” team is led by Jason Barry (224), Jarod Wichnovitz (207), Nick Ingenito (207) and Tim Barclay (209). The “B” team is also a force to be reckoned with as they also averaged over 800 for the season. Michael Cataldo (201), Shawn Kender (204), Michael Cregg (199) and John Daly (197) make up that fearsome foursome. The “A” team averaged 824 for the season and the B team averaged 826. They have thrown six 900 games as a team with a high of 957. Oh, by the way, Nick Ingenito and John Daly threw perfect 300 games.
#2 seed, Susan Wagner led by coach, Chris Columbo, will once again try to win their first City Championship since 1994. Wagner has been the City Finalist last four years and that has made them hungry to get back to the championship game and to try and take home the gold this year. Their “A” team led by Peter Fazio (192), Joe Dasilva (191), Nicholas Tellefsen (209), and Sal Morndo (191) are ready to take their team to the finals. The “A” team averaged 757 and the “B” with Sean Feldman (189), Tristan Roque (193), Josh Herrmann (184) and Steven Goffredo (178) averaged 732. They have thrown seven 800 games with a high of 867.
# 3 seed, Goldstein leads the Brooklyn squads. The Dolphins have never been ranked this high and after getting to the semi finals the last two years, they are aiming even higher this year. Coached by Vicki D’Orazio, the team is led by Kevin Ultsh (206), Patrick Centino (189), Michael Mandel (193) and Anthony Fandacone (183). The “B” team is led by Anthony Volpe (187),and Joseph Santangelo (184) The “A” team averaged 760 and the “B” team averaged 709. They have thrown two 800 games with a high of 860.
# 4 seed Brooklyn Studio coached by Craig Cutaneo, has moved up to the elite teams this year. Michael Cannizzaro (197), Daniel Simpson (189), Joe Morales (178) and Allen Fisher (175) make up a formidable “A” team. The “B” team is led by John Hamel (180), Chris Armenti (179), Mario Sgroi (178) and Alexander Lewis (166). The “A” team averaged 728 and the “B team averaged 685. They have thrown two 800 games with a high of 817.
# 5 seed, New Dorp, coached by Cathy McCarthy, also boasts a talented “A” team. Led by Robert Huber (196), Michael Calabrese (193), Robert Van Pelt (185) and Mark Lipari (182) they finished 3rd in the tough Staten Island division. The “B” team is made up of Chris Cannone (188), Tommy Vitale (182), Ryan Van Pelt (178) and Lewis Goldberg (170). The A team averaged 731 and the “B” averaged 694. They have thrown six 800 games with a high of 856.
# 6 seed, Benjamin Cardozo, coached by John Tsolekas has done a great job in his first year as the coach. They are led by Brandon Greenberg (199), freshman Rex Justin Villa (193), Michael Kyriacou (183) and Daniel Greenberger (180). The “B” team is headed by Justin Harris (174), Joshua Joe (172) and Amanda Karalis (170. Cardozo’s high game was 816. Cardozo has thrown two 800 games with a high of 814. The “A” team averaged 735 and the “B” averaged 664.
#7 seed, Bayside, coached by Dave Katz, Kevin Viloria (198) once again leads the hungry Commodores. Blake Cholost (178), Ryan Berglund (189) and Richard Weiner (189) fill out the rest of this formidable “A” team. Daniel Ruiz (187) heads the “B” team. The “A” team averaged 751 and the “B team averaged 630. They have thrown two 800 games with a high of 830. All of this has been done without Matthew Pope.
# 8 seed Petrides coached by new coach, Michael Blyth, has reached new heights. The “A” team consists of Anthony Hannula (207), Jon Vaphides (194), Joseph Calendrillo (188) and Cory Gerard (180). They have thrown six 800 games with a high of 868. The “A” team averaged 773 and the “B” team averaged 603.
# 9 seed, New Utrecht, coached by Rick Demarco, depends on their very strong “A” team. Led by Anthony Vasile (203), Francisco Rivera (175), Ronald Shea (196), and Nick Garoogian (183) they have bowled four 800 games with a high of 860. The “A” team averaged 748.
# 10 seed, Port Richmond, coached by Vito Bottitta, has gone from a 0-12 season to one of the top teams in the PSAL. Martin Manomat (202), John Mastromarino (187), Jon Petrizzi (176) and Nick Anderson (172) have led the Raiders all year. Michael Orlando (166) solidifies the “B” team. They have a high game of 816. The “A” team averaged 709 and the “B team averaged 608.
# 11 seed, Edison, coached by Mike Peaceman, made it all the way to the City Championship match last year – they would like to be there again this year. Bakare Oneil (201), leads the way with Alan McMillan (189), Nicholas Laguer (168) and James Phillip Wilson (166) close behind. They are backed up with Marcus Wilson (164) heading the “B” team. The “A” team averaged 717.
Team to watch in the playoffs: Beach Channel (733 “A” team – Michael Holgate 198 avg), Fort Hamilton (718 “A” team – Ryan Hillert 198 avg), John Adams (722 “A” team – Alex Young 204 avg), and Forest Hills (733 “A” team – Dylan Bustillo 194 avg).
