AED Registration Information
In May 2002 legislation was enacted to add a new section 917 to the Education Law requiring school districts to provide Automated External Defibrillators (AED) for use during emergencies. An AED is a device that is used to restore a normal heartbeat in an individual who has experienced sudden cardiac arrest caused by certain kinds of irregular heartbeats.
The state law also requires public schools to ensure the presence of personnel who are trained in the operation and use of an AED:
· Whenever public school facilities are used for school-sponsored or school-approved curricular or extracurricular activities, or
· Whenever a school-sponsored athletic contest or practice is held at any location.
The Department of Education, in its continuous effort to ensure the safety of its student-athletes is mandating all coaches to be certified in First Aid/ and CPR/AED. This additional AED requirement must be in all coaching position postings for the 2003-04 school year.
